Quiet Things to Do in Saco, Maine (Rainy Days Included)

Harmonic Egg Saco ·

What is there to do in Saco, Maine when it rains?

On a rainy day in Saco, Maine, downtown holds up: Main Street coffee and shops, the mill buildings along the Saco River, and the Harmonic Egg at 110 Main Street, Suite 1210, where a private 50-minute sound and light session runs daily by appointment.

What is there to do in Saco, Maine when it rains?

Southern Maine is famous for beaches, which is a lovely plan for eight days a year and a scramble the rest of the time. Saco holds up better than people expect once the weather turns. Downtown is walkable, the mills along the Saco River have been turned into shops and studios, and almost everything worth doing sits within a few blocks of Main Street.

A slow afternoon downtown

  1. Start with coffee on Main Street and walk the block, which takes about as long as your cup lasts.
  2. Look across at the falls where the Saco River runs between Saco and Biddeford. Better in the rain, honestly.
  3. Browse the mill buildings and the small independent shops on either side of the river.
  4. Book a 50-minute Harmonic Egg® session, which is the part almost nobody plans for and most guests remember longest.
  5. Finish with an early dinner in Biddeford, five minutes away.

The unusual one: the Harmonic Egg

At 110 Main Street, Suite 1210, there is a hand-built wooden chamber shaped like an egg. You sit inside on a zero-gravity chair, the door closes, and for 50 minutes the chamber fills with music and slowly changing colored light. No touch. No water. No phone. Roughly 40 minutes of music, then about 10 minutes of quiet.

It is a private experience, one guest at a time, which makes it different from a group sound bath and a good fit for people who find crowds draining. It is indoors and year-round, so it works equally well in February sleet and August humidity. Guests describe it as the calmest hour of their trip. Some fall asleep. That is fine.

To be clear about what it is: a complementary relaxation experience, not a medical treatment or therapy for any condition. It does not diagnose or cure anything, and it is not a substitute for care from a doctor or care team. It is simply a very deliberate hour of rest.

Good to know before you come

  • Sessions are by appointment, daily, and single sessions are $100 ($125 for a first visit, which includes an intake conversation).
  • Wear comfortable clothes and go easy on fragrance.
  • Drink water before and after.
  • Park in the front lot at 110 Main Street, with more parking around back, downhill. Inside the main entrance, take the elevator; it opens on the other side and Suite 1210 is right down the hallway.
  • Coming from further out? Saco is about 20 minutes from Portland, 10 from Old Orchard Beach, and 5 from Biddeford.

Other calm ideas nearby

  • Walk the beach in bad weather. Old Orchard Beach out of season is startlingly peaceful.
  • Wander the Biddeford mill district for bookshops, bakeries, and small galleries.
  • Drive the back roads toward Kennebunk if you would rather look at things through a windshield.
